Many people wonder what the people are made of who jump out of planes with parachutes or who throw themselves off a bridge with some elastic tied to their feet, etc. The truth is that extreme sports are more fashionable than ever. People are hungry for an adrenaline rush. The endless working hours, the monotony, the sedentary life all play a part. Bungee jumping, kite surfing, skydiving, extreme skiing… All these disciplines are not new but they have become the latest trends! The extreme sports move record amounts of money worldwide and everyday there are more and more fans who practice them. Here are some of the most popular extreme sport practices:

Bungee Jumping: the bungee jumping consists of leaping into the void from a considerable height with rope and elastic tied to your ankles. The elasticity of the string dampens the fall and saves you from crashing into the ground! It can be practiced from a platform, from a bridge, crane and other spots. This idea originates from the village of Bunlap on the Pentecost Island, where the young boys jump from about 25m with vines tied to their feet to become an adult. These boys actually graze their heads on the ground. Incredible! Bungee Jumping was introduced in the 80s in countries like New Zealand and France, and then it spread around the globe. Today it is one of the extreme sports that has most fans.

Skydiving: the skydiving is one of the most striking risk sports. If you want some excitement, this is your sport. It consists of parachuting from a plane, helicopter or balloon. In just 10 seconds into the jump you reach almost 200 km per hour! The jumps can be made from about 3,000 metres approximately, until they reach about 760metres from the ground by which time the parachute is opened. This is not suitable for weak hearts! This sport came about because of military parachuting, but it was not until 1950 that the International Aeronautical Federation accepted it as a sport.

Kite surfing: some people say that if you practice it once, you’ll practice it forever. It is much easier than other extreme sports – though no less rewarding. To practice it you need a kite, a board, direction bar and a harness that holds you to the kite. Now you just have to get carried away by the wind and the waves, jumping several metres in height. It’s as if you were flying! Come on!

We were shocked--shocked--to see Matthew McConaughey, Our Lord Of Perpetual Bare-Chestedness, with a covered torso on a recent surfing trip in Malibu. If you’re hanging out in Hawaii this week, please make sure your tropical umbrella drink is securely placed in a cup holder. Paradise is going to be a little stormy over the next few days as Tropical Storm Felicia nears the Aloha State. The storm was hurricane strength over the weekend, but it has slowly lost its mojo. Still, a tropical storm is serious, so visitors should still be cautious heading out into the surf and keep watch for rip currents.

Despite some beaches being closed on the Big Island, we’re thinking that passionate surfers aren’t going to heed these warnings. After all, the bigger the storm, the bigger the waves.

Dreading the doldrums of winter already? Instead of hibernating til spring, you could spend two weeks this January volunteering, surfing, and exploring private beaches, all while living in a beach side cottage just outside of Canoa, Ecuador. The Eco Surf Volunteer program matches volunteers with local elementary schools where they work hard teaching the kids English through games, activities and sports. But, they also find time to play hard. Each afternoon volunteers are taken to the area's best surf spots to catch some waves before going on a local excursion to meet indigenous tribes, visit re-forested mangrove islands or explore animal sanctuaries.

The daily schedule for the trip begins at 7:00 AM when breakfast is served before heading to a local school. There is a lunch break from Noon- 2:00 PM, which is when the afternoon surf lessons begin, followed by dinner at 7. Volunteers also have the option to take a free, private surf lesson from Ecuador's Junior Surf Champion and his team. Each night, Eco Surf also plans social activities like beach parties, bonfires or salsa dancing.

Maui native Ian Walsh looked good early in the latest Triple Crown of Surfing event, but he ended up missing the cut after the quarterfinals. Think you could hang longer? Then you need to head to Maui, where the surf is ripping right now. The swells--like they do every year--are drawing heaps of surfers and windsurfers looking to shred. Coastal hot spot Torquay, a mecca for all surfers and the birthplace of some of the global surf brands such as Rip Curl, Piping Hot and Quicksilver, is the focus of a newly launched tour from Melbourne Sport Tours offering visitors the opportunity to experience Australia’s famous surf culture.

Running from October until March, the one-day Surf Coast Tour includes a two-hour learn-to-surf lesson at Torquay Beach with a fully trained local instructor, a visit Torquay's Surf World Museum and a trip to Bells Beach to see Aussie surfers in action. Participants will also have the chance to shop for the latest surf gear from local (now world famous) brand outlets such as Rip Curl, Quicksilver and Roxy.

Private and group tours are also available and optional extras that can be added to the Surf Coast Tour include a scenic flight over the Great Ocean Road and the Twelve Apostles; and overnight accommodation packages.

Extreme sports enthusiasts are never happy with doing things the normal way. They are masters of innovation and if something can be done differently, chances are someone will attempt it. In extreme sports terms, snowboarding and surfing are two sports that are very well established, but perhaps a little old hat for some people now. Is it any wonder then that some bright spark decided to see what would happen if they took the fin off their shortboard and tried carving down a snowy mountain on it?

The sport of snow surfing is thought to have first been conceived in New Zealand when a visiting Australian surfer decided to see if he could ride his board on the white stuff. Since then, crazy folk all over the world have been talking up this new sport. Enthusiasts say that it requires a huge amount of skill and confidence. Unlike snowboards, riders do not have any bindings to attach themselves to the board, but instead rely on aggressive carving and the use of the hands to ensure that the board stays under their feet. Stopping has also proved something of a challenge due to the lack of sharp ‘edges’ on a surfboard, but most runs incorporate a run-off area where riders can slow down.

As with all emerging extreme sports, sponsors and industry brands have been paying close attention to see if it is worth their while getting involved. Apparently both Rip Curl and Burton have shown interest in the sport and have been following the most promising individuals. However, as the sport is still so new, it is likely to be a little while before formal events start taking place and stars are given the publicity that some of the more mainstream sport professionals receive. That said, given the early growth of the sport, you might soon be seeing some snow surfers at a resort new you.

Time Magazine recently did an article on the explosion of Standup Paddle Surfing (SUP). Here is an excerpt:

Stand-up paddle surfing may sound like a scene from a screwball comedy, but no one’s laughing in a sports and fitness industry that has hit the recession skids as hard as any other business.

SUP, as it’s called for short, looks exactly as it sounds: you stand on a large surfboard and propel yourself forward with a paddle. But, unlike traditional surfing, you don’t have to wait for the waves. In fact, SUP, which is wildly popular, can be done on lakes, rivers, pools or any sufficiently large body of water. “It’s completely blown up in the past five years and every spring it just blows up even more,” says Jim Brewer, 45, a painting contractor who, in October 2008 and in spite of everyone calling him nuts, opened Blueline Stand-Up Paddle Surf in Santa Barbara, Calif., the first fully dedicated SUP shop in the country. “We thought it was phasing out, but then we realized that it’s just beginning. It’s going mainstream.”

The votes are in. Kitesurfing is hot, and it’s taking the world by storm! While people have been dabbling with kite-powered vehicles for hundreds of years, the rather mature and refined system used in kitesurfing has only been around for about 10 to 15 years.

Some of the main reasons kitesurfing is so popular is that there are no site-fees to pay (like downhill skiing), the kite can make huge jumps possible, and you don’t have to have surf-able waves or a speed boat to get pulled around on the water. Once you get learn to ride and get your gear, you can go whenever the conditions are good.

Now you can’t just fly any ol’ delta kite and stand on a longboard and expect to rock the waves. The kites used in the sport are specially designed and über powerful. They don’t sink or turn into sea anchors when you accidentally fly them into the water, they are steerable, and they have a sort of throttle control. You hook the control lines to a harness that distributes the pull around your chest or waist or hips, and you use a board that has foot straps to hold it on to your feet.

People who participate in action sports like skiing, surfing, snowboarding and BMX cycling can be among the first to notice polluted water and landscapes. However, these so-called extreme sports can cause problems for the environment, often using eco-unfriendly practices and materials.

Surfing is a good example of the problems surrounding extreme sports. Surfers, who cultivate a groovy image that speaks of living simply on pristine beaches, are often made ill from navigating raw sewage discharged into oceans near their favorite beaches. On the other hand, the toxic nature of surfboard manufacturing, which has included urethane, fiberglass and polyester resin, has become a well-known downside to the sport. In 2005, the primary supplier of polyurethane foam “blanks” for surfboards went out of business, rumored to be under investigation for poor environmental practices and having been sued by the widow of a former worker, who claimed her husband died from exposure to toluene diisocyanate at the factory.
